Permanence of writing

[edit] And yet, the internet is not really there...

Perhaps because many people somehow regard the internet as an 'ethereal', invisible, or impermanent entity, they often don't seem particularly concerned about the possibility that their words might hang around in the virtual air. An email is simply a bit of digital detritus, no more than a couple of sentences exchanged in passing in the corridor, or a few heated words in the pub.

[edit] ....because perhaps it is here

Or perhaps the internet is too intimate for us to believe that what we say is really 'out there', where everyone can see. When we write that mean email, or type that unfortunate blog comment, or spout forth on the the facts (or unfacts) of the matter...well, it's like talking to yourself, isn't it? The typos don't matter, and neither do the sentiments - that much.

But it words both ways. And words can be engraved in digital stone.
